Review: Maybelline Baby Lips

Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm

I am completely torn when it comes to Maybelline Baby Lips.  For the longest time I just couldn’t justify spending four dollars (yes I know that’s kind of sad) on a lip balm that performed, in my view, the same as any other.  But the more I’ve used them, the more positives I’ve found.

The scents of these are rather strong – for some this could be a bad thing, and I’m not one for smelly makeup products, but I’ll have to admit that the smells aren’t bad.  There is peppermint, fruity, and everywhere in between.  The scent does fade rather quickly, but it makes for pleasant application.  And I must say that although there is a scent, these are not flavored, and are tasteless, for the most part.
Out of all six, four of these lip balms are tinted.  The tints are actually pretty surprising, and go on quite bright and true to the color of the product itself.  However the tint fades within a half an hour, which is sad.  Although I wasn’t particularly in love with the colors of these at first, that all changed when I picked up Baby Lips in Pink Punch… it’s a bright, neon pink, for which I have a serious soft spot in my heart.  This is the only one that I found is really pretty and unique.

When you apply these, initially they are absolutely lovely.  They feel moisturizing, and don’t feel waxy at all.  They even have a slight gloss finish, which is really pretty on the tinted versions.  They’re light and don’t feel greasy or sticky, which is a huge plus for me.  But do they live up to Maybelline’s claim that they’ll make your lips “baby soft” in a few weeks?  No, not really.  In fact, after a few hours my lips feel like they’re just coated in dead skin and need to be exfoliated!  Not chapped, necessarily, but kind of gross.

These do require reapplication, if you want to keep the “baby soft” feel and the color intact.  They fade unfortunately quick, but as they are only a lip balm, you have to anticipate that.  But I must also stress that reapplying any lip balm constantly is not actually good for your lips.  Most contain waxes that actually draw moisture out of the lips, instead of locking it in.  For truly soft lips you must keep hydrated!
The packaging of these is quite tacky, in my opinion… it reminds me of the Babies-R-Us logo, and although I really have no aversion to bright colors, I’m simply not a fan.  The packaging is quite sturdy though, and the balms retract completely and click in place, so you’ll avoid the whole “chapstick-stuck-in-the-lid” dilemma.

Overall, how do I feel?  I’m not sure.  I love them and yet I'm not IN love..  I suppose I’ll have to give Baby Lips overall a Thumbs Up.  $4.00

I'm quite happy with my burt's bees lip balm, although I am extremely drawn to the bright colors on these! I do kinda wanna try one, but after reading your review, I think i'll pass!

  3. I only have Pink Punch and I love it. They retail for about $3 where I live so I don't mind the price. Sucks you didn't get "baby soft lips" from these. Mine saved me from the horrible, painful lips I got from Revlon's lip butter

  5. Hello Hilary!

Nice blog, I am a new follower! :) I have the baby lips in Peppermint and I was not impressed either. I will definitely have to try the Pink Punch because it looks pretty on! My lips definitely felt like they had a weird coating on them after a while and I ended up going back to my favorite lip balm Blistex Lip Medex. Now that stuff makes your lips baby soft, lol. Thanks for the review!

  6. I loved the product. I have 3 of them. Purple, peach, and the plain clear one. They worked very well for me as I have developed reactions to blistex, chapstick, carmex, and even Burt's bees. I give it an A+ for folks who can't use traditional medicated lip balms like me.

  7. it looks cheap..and the price is not reasonable. Maybelline was never this costly for simple stuff like a lip balm.

  9. I got mine for free today at London Drugs when you spend x amount of dollars with in store coupon. The packaging is rather babyish with garish colours, but at the same time it's light hearted and fun. The back even reads: INTENDED FOR ADULT USE lol. I haven't used it yet. I look forward to the fun colour and SPF aspects. Not expecting too too much of a moisturizing aspect though. The reason run of the mill lip balms are bad because the are simply very waxy full of weird synthetic ingredients (what the heck is ozokerite??) that just sit on the skin. More than anything I suppose they could be viewed as protectants, not moisturizers which is why your lips constantly feel chapped and you must reapply 25 min. I also get weird reactions from these products, swollen lips yuck. Which is why I am more then happy to fork out average $5 for natural, organic balms like Burt' bees (2 pack is the best deal, look into it if you can!) or Desert essence, kiss my face etc. I look for ones made with real beeswax, natural emollient oils or butters like olive, almond, Shea butter, and my fave, aloe Vera.

Honestly I am more on a budget these days. I could actually make such beeswax balms myself and an easier option of simply pouring a combination of natural oils inside a clean lip gloss tube as theasiest non-petroleum jelly DIY lip conditioner ever. Not anytime soon though as I have another 4 balms to go through. These babies go wherever I go, and wherever they are there I am :) my dry lips can't be without them, honestly

  11. Well, ladies. My experience with Baby lips is going pretty good so far. I bought the Pink Wink one and let me tell you this color is absolutely adorable ! It has made my lips stand out so much. I just got it yesterday i have recieved so many compliments because of it so far! It looks great with a natural makeup look such as your basic eyeliner, mascara, and a soft light brown/beige shade for your eyeshadow. I call it my "barbie" look. A few negative things about this is that you probably should wear a regular chapstick underneath of this one because dead skin showed up a few hours after applying. Other than that I love my pretty pink lips and i cant wait to try the pink punch. The shades are awesome. & my lips now look fuller!!

  12. I love Baby Lips! I had bought the mint green one without a tint awhile ago and used it all! Once it was gone I had to go and buy it again. This time I got peach kiss, in the purple tube, and still love it very much. I found that you have to use this balm for atleast a week religiously and you'll get the results of their claims. My lips are so plump and full for some reason now! And so soft! Love love love baby lips. (:

  14. Guys, I have been using Baby Lips for almost 3 months now, amazing, it's only 2.99 at Target and Walmart, 3.99 at CVS. .... I've only used the color Peach Kiss in the purple tube, it has made my lips fuller, softer, it stays on longer, it has made my lips less likely to dry, therefore, I don't peel my lips anymore. I even put it on before bed sometimes to see if it will stay soft, and IT DOES. Most importantly it doesn't leave that white film on the inner folds of my lips the way other lip balms do when I forget to re-apply. The white film is embarrassing. I have very dry, easy to crack lips, this balm is amazing. I've gotten a stock pile of it because they've been advertised as limited edition for sometime now.

  15. Recently, I also blogged about using the Baby Lips collection. deannamcneil.blog.com
Fortunately, this product is one of the best I've ever used and it doesn't dry my lips out over hours of wear, which is especially great because I'm a Wisconsin model. Living in the cold drys my lips out to where the skin cracks and the dry surface begins peeling. Yuck! Baby Lips preps my lips for shoots, shows and events where I need my lips to be healthy and moisturized.
